I wanted to comment here as well as on the Mormon Expression website. This was a fantastic podcast, and I particularly appreciated the way you brought out the fact that racism is more than hate speech and violence. I think that this simplistic understanding of the problem has led to both a lack of recognition of the racism that is still deeply embedded in our culture, and to the distaste modern white Americans (me too! I’m totally copping to this and trying to recognize it) in accepting the burden of being raised in a racist culture and being a (hopefully) recovering racist.
Thanks for participating. You really helped me - there’s a selfish statement - in my efforts to better understand the consequences and nuances of race and culture, particularly when they have the added weight of the Voice of God.
This was a fantastic epiosde of Mormon Expression and my first introduction to Darron and his work. My favorite line was something along the lines of “Black members don’t go to church to teach white members how to be nice!” I had never thought about the fact that black members do feel like they have to apologize for being mormons. What an interesting perspective!
I wish I believed that it would help to stay in the church to try to change things. There are many, many things about the church that bother me and the racism is a big one, but not the only one, and I just can’t be a part of it anymore.
